Underground line locating
Know where your private lines run before you dig.
Kingz Contracting locates private underground lines in Santa Margarita and across San Luis Obispo County. Using a sonde locator, we trace sewer laterals, septic lines, drain lines, and conduit so you can plan digging, grading, and site work around them.
Lines we can locate
We assess lines with an access point, such as a cleanout or open end. The sonde must fit and travel through the line, and locating depends on site and signal conditions.
- Sewer laterals
- Septic tank inlet and outlet lines
- Drain and storm lines
- Electrical and utility conduit
- Irrigation and water sleeves
- Other pipe the locator sonde can be fed into
How it works
- 1
Access the line
A small transmitter (sonde) is fed into the pipe or conduit through a cleanout, open end, or other access point.
- 2
Trace from the surface
A receiver picks up the sonde's signal above ground and traces the line's path across the property.
- 3
Mark the route
The traced path is marked on the ground so you and your crew know where the line runs before work starts.
Always call 811 before you dig
Contact USA North 811 at least two working days before planned excavation, not counting the notification day, and confirm the required utility responses before digging. Private locating supplements this process; it does not replace an 811 request. Check USA North 811 guidance (opens in a new tab)
Line locating questions
- Do I still need to call 811?
- Yes. Contact USA North 811 at least two working days before planned excavation, not counting the day you notify them. Confirm all required utility responses before digging. Utility operators mark their facilities; privately owned lines may require a separate locate. Our service does not replace an 811 request.
- What kinds of lines can you locate?
- We assess accessible private pipes and conduit for sonde-based locating, including sewer laterals, septic lines, and drain lines. The sonde must fit and travel through the line. Access, blockages, depth, materials, and signal conditions can limit what can be traced; we confirm suitability for each job.
- Can line locating be part of a bigger project?
- Yes. Locating can be done on its own before you dig, or as part of site preparation and grading on a general building project.
